It had been a long time coming. Fans anxiously awaited the arrival of Part 3 of Disenchantment.
Created by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, the show centers around the life of a princess named Tiabeanie and her unique friends, Luci and Elfo. After the pandemic hit, the possibility of the new part’s arrival was growing dimmer by the month. Their social media went dark throughout all of quarantine. Finally, one glorious day, the Disenchantment Twitter page announced that it would be returning to Netflix on January 15th. When I tell you I jumped for joy at this announcement, I mean it.
As the third part of this series, I had concerns about where they would take the show. We were left with a huge cliffhanger in Part 2, where after almost being burned at the stake for shooting her father, Bean and her friends wind up in a secret underground cave where they are greeted by her mother, who we supposedly saw die earlier in the season. Of course, this left fans dying to see what happens at this mother-daughter reunion. Critics of the show thought that Part 2 did not live up to the same gusto that Part 1 had. While I think Part 1 was my personal favorite, I disagree that Part 2 didn’t live up. The storylines were humorous, interesting, and unpredictable. I thoroughly enjoyed where they took the story. Dagmar returns to Maru with Bean, where Bean discovers her mother is nuts; Bean, Luci, and Elfo go to Hell (literally); Oona becomes a pirate queen; Zog falls in love with a bear; Bean accidentally discovers Steamland and “stience,” and that’s not even everything.
In Part 3, we are introduced to new creatures called “Trogs.” Trogs are basically what their name entails, some sort of frog and troll hybrid. They are under the ruling of Queen Dagmar, whom they think is the chosen one. Bean and her friends seek to escape the underground lair of the Trogs and return to Dreamland. The first half of Part 3 explores new settings and reintroduces us to settings we have seen before, including a return to Mermaid Island as well as Steamland. Part 3 definitely explores deeper themes in an unfolding epic narrative, as opposed to Part 1 and its more stand-alone nature. It’s an incredible season of twists and turns, with still enough humor to laugh your way through the sticky situations they find themselves in.
*HUGE SPOILER ALERT*
You have to admit, Matt Groening sure knows how to write a cliffhanger. The ending of Part 3 involved a brutal fight between Bean and Dagmar, which resulted in Luci getting his head chopped off. It’s not looking good for poor Luci, but I cannot imagine Disenchantment without him. Like Elfo, I’m hoping Part 4 involves the quest to bring Luci back to life. Please let my suspicions be correct.
*END OF SPOILER*
I think in Part 4, we will finally see King Zog return to his old self again. Hopefully, Chaz will be able to “Chaz” him back to health as he did before. I’m also hoping to see the ultimate demise of Dagmar. And can we get Elfo back from the ogres? That would be great, thanks.
Disenchantment Part 4 has already been confirmed with Netflix, but the release date is unknown. Considering we got Part 3 at the beginning of 2021, I doubt we will see Part 4 any time this year. As for Part 5 and beyond, I’m sure the feedback on Part 4 will determine that. Now I really wish I didn’t fly through the third part. It’s going to be a long wait until 2022.
